Located approximately two kms north of Swansea city centre, Cwmbwrla ward comprises the Brynhyfryd, Manselton and Cwmbwrla localities. Neighbouring wards include Mynyddbach, Landore, Castle, Townhill, Cockett, Penderry. It is in the Welsh Government and UK Parliamentary Constituency of Swansea East.

The ward covers a total area of 150 hectares and has a population density of 53 people per hectare. Its total population is 7,900. Major employers are Mecca Bingo, Wickes DIY, B&Q, City & County of Swansea, Interserve, and other Carmarthen Road Industrial Estate businesses.

Cockett has the 10th largest ward population in Swansea, and is the second most densely populated. It has a slightly higher proportion of under 16s, people aged 25-44 and people aged 45-64 compared with the Swansea average. There are correspondingly lower proportions of people aged 16-24 and 65-74.

Birth and death rates are slightly above the Swansea average. The ward also has higher proportions of people born in Wales and with no qualifications.
