Approximately seven kms west of the city centre, Fairwood ward consists mainly of the settlements of Upper Killay and Three Crosses. Its neighbouring wards are Gowerton, Dunvant, Killay South, Mayals, Bishopston, Pennard, Gower, Penclawdd.

Fairwood is a rural Development Plan eligible ward and is in the Welsh Government and UK Parliamentary Constituency of Gower.

The ward covers 1,369 hectares and has a population density of 2.1 people per hectare, with a total population of 2,900. Its major employers are City & County of Swansea schools.

Fairwood is the seventh smallest ward population in Swansea and has the third lowest population density. Compared to the Swansea average, it has a relatively high proportion of people aged 45-74. It has lower proportions of 16-44 year olds.

Birth and death rates are below the Swansea average and there is a high proportion of couple households and people with higher level qualifications.
