Penny Matthews

Chair – Licensing Committee

Electoral Ward: Llansamlet

Cllr.Penny.Matthews@swansea.gov.uk

01792 636 923

I was elected in the 2007 by-election, and have held regular surgeries in Trallwn and Birchgrove Community Centres. I regularly attend PACT meetings at both Trallwn and Birchgrove.

I set up a Facebook page ‘Llansamlet Labour New’ that I update regularly. I also arranged an initial meeting and support the setting up of the Friends of Primrose Park that is currently under construction.

I am a retired civil servant and hold staunch beliefs in the Trade Union Movement, and as a Member of the Union (depending which department I was working in) have held a number of posts form rep for the PCS to chair for the Swansea Bay IRSF. I essentially championed the rights of the workforce right up until my retirement in 2008.

I currently sit as chair of Licensing which is not only an interesting role but a challenging one too.

I have attended the Magistrates Courts when appeals have been made against decisions the committee have made; to see first-hand what exactly happens there. At the request of the taxi trade I made an unexpected visit to Wind Street at 2:30am one Sunday morning to investigate for myself complaints received.
