The Rainbow Flag will fly at half-mast today at Swansea’s Civic Centre as a mark of respect for the victims of Sunday’s gun attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, which left 50 dead and 53 wounded.
“I think I speak for all council members when I say we are all shocked and horrified at the news,” said City and County of Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart.
“We want to join with those all over the world who are making gestures of support for the victims and their families.”
The Rainbow Flag is a symbol of the lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Added Cllr Stewart: “Crimes of this kind are driven by a hatred most of us struggle to understand. It’s vitally important that such acts of terror are countered by a worldwide show of compassion, support and solidarity.”
There will also be one minute’s silence at the opening of the next full Council meeting at 5pm this Thursday to mark the whole council’s solidarity with the victims and their families.
