Swansea Labour Council launch new ‘phone and pick up’ library book scheme

A new ‘Phone and Pick Up’ book service at four Swansea libraries has been launched by the Labour-led Council administration.

The innovative service is now operating at a number of libraries, designed for those who prefer to have the books in their hands rather than just an online service which has been running for residents during lockdown.

The people of Swansea have been able to access e-books and audio books as well as magazines, news and other services.

Now, as the Welsh Government eases some of the lockdown restrictions, the ‘Phone and Pick Up’ service will be operating on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays out of Swansea Central, Gorseinon, Morriston and Oystermouth libraries.

Labour Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said ‘Phone and Pick Up’ was an innovative step towards normality for those who love their libraries.

He said: “The new service will operate in a very straightforward way. Residents will be able to order books or audio books by phoning one of our four participating libraries on selected days.

“They’ll then need to arrange to collect them at an agreed time and similarly can also arrange a time to return the books.

“In line with guidance, all returned books will go into a 72-hour quarantine before they’ll be available to be loaned out again.

“Of course it’s not library book-lending as we used to know it and our libraries will remain closed for the time being. But it’s a good step forward for those of us who love to read with a book in our hands.”

Those who had items out on loan when lockdown started will see them automatically renewed until they can be returned to the library safely. If you have any concerns about your account then please contact us at libraryline@swansea.gov.uk.
