Flag pole donated by Labour councillors to fly Green Flag award

Townhill’s three Labour Councillors are funding a flag pole to fly the Green Flag Community Award presented to Friends of Mayhill Washing Pond.

The flag pole is to be donated by Cllrs Cyril Anderson, David Hopkins and Lesley Walton from their Community Budget.

The award, which is judged by Keep Wales Tidy, is in recognition to the hard work done by volunteers in the ward to transform the historic Wishing Pond.

The group have also created a unique Community Food Garden on the slopes of the old North Hill playground.

Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart congratulated the Townhill ward members and the Friends Group on their achievement.

“It’s another great example of the community coming together to deliver a fantastic facility for the whole ward and neighbourhood to enjoy,” said Cllr Stewart.

“The Friends of the Washing Pond have worked so hard to get it back into use and to be awarded a Green Flag is a fantastic achievement.”

Cllr Hopkins paid particular thanks to his fellow ward member Cllr Walton for her vision in helping to transform the Washing Pond.

“The area was overgrown terribly – there was a lot of rubbish and black backs being dumped,” he explained.

“But the community got behind it and I think it’s a credit to Lesley and her persistence. I would like to thank her and the community for their hard work.

“And we as ward members are delighted to be supplying a flag pole which will proudly display the Green Flag.”

Cllr Walton added: “We are very pleased to have received this Green Flag award. It’s been a result of the hard work of all the committee.

“A local resident together with support from a Communities 1st officer had been tackling fly-tipping here. They raised the issue with me, and I suggested forming a Friends group to look after the area. The difference we have made over the past couple of years has been fantastic.

“And this is the second award we have won. Back in March we were one of only 12 places in Wales to get the Community Land Advisory Service (CLAS) Award.”
