A Swansea karate club has praised their local Labour councillors for helping them to send two competitors to the European Championships in Dublin this weekend.
The Wales Karate-do Wadokai club are sending two girls – Chloe Lewis (11) and Nia Williams (10) – to the championships with the Wales national team after Mynyddbach councillors Gloria Tanner, Mike Lewis and Sam Pritchard contributed travelling funds from their community budget.
“We can’t thank the councillors enough for their help. Their contribution means the difference between these girls going and not going to Dublin,” said Chris Lewis, chief instructor at the Wales Karate-do Wadokai club.
“To give the girls an experience like this is second to none. They have experienced Welsh and British Championships but for them to get experience at a European championships is unreal. This is the next level and it’s so exciting for them to experience this.”
Added Chris: “We can’t be more thankful of the councillors’ generosity.”
Cllr Tanner said: “I along with my ward colleagues are delighted to sponsor the Karate group in their efforts to win awards in the forthcoming competition in Dublin.
“I was amazed to find that they had no sponsorship in place. I felt that it was the right thing to do for this group of young children. The group are made up of committed and dedicated children of all ages. The Karate group has a good record, winning many competitions in the past.
“They bring much to the Community of Mynyddbach which deserves our support and recognition. I wish them well in Dublin.”
Cllr Lewis added: “I did not hesitate when asked to sponsor the local Karate group. I have witnessed all the hard work they put into their sport. Thanks to the effort put in by the coaches I am confident both girls will do well in Dublin.”
Cllr Pritchard said: “This is a brilliant initiative organised and ran by hard working volunteers in the local the community. I am proud to support the positive work they are doing.”
