Penyrheol and Gorseinon councillors have provided £450 from their community budgets to help a local running club with their first aid training.
3M Gorseinon Runners have received the donation from Labour councillors Andrew Stevens and Jan Curtice (Penyrheol) and Cllr Kelly Roberts (Gorseinon) which will assist them with training on a defibrillator.
And Mark Bamford, chairman of the running club, said he was extremely grateful for donation.
“My thanks must go to our local councillors Andrew, Jan and Kelly for their donation which secures all our first aid training requirements,” said Mark.
“It ensures that all our coaches and relevant members will be trained in first aid ensuring that our members and racing community will benefit if required to be called upon.
“We currently have 177 members and support the Swansea Park run by making our defibrillator available for them every Saturday due to one not being available currently.
“The reason it is so important to us is that almost a year ago we lost our great friend and Treasurer Mr Geoff White to a heart attack whilst out cycling with our members. This hit our club hard and to create a legacy for Geoff we did a memorial run and had a collection which helped us purchase the defibrillator and the training to ensure that his fate would happen to anyone else.
“We are a proud community club and can be found running the streets of Gorseinon in the spring and summer months every Wednesday and welcome anyone along who wants to join.
Cllr Stevens said: “I am delighted to help support 3M’s Runners, which is an excellent local fitness group that has more than 170 members of all ages from around the area.
“Our donation will help members take on essential first aid and defibrillator training to ensure that they are fully equipped should an emergency happen.
“Mark is doing excellent work with the running club and I applaud them for offering their services to competitions across the county.”
Details of the club can be found at www.3mgorseinonrr.co.uk and they cater for all levels of running.
All coaches are qualified and offer a friendly atmosphere for everyone.
Added Mark: “It is important that as a community we can offer our experience and warmth to anyone which ultimately makes our community have a healthy life balance.”
