Motorists heading for Swansea railway station will have improved parking arrangements thanks to a scheme driven by the Labour-led Swansea Council, Network Rail and Transport for Wales.
The dedicated rail user parking spaces will move from the Mariner Street car park to the top deck of the High Street multi-storey.
There will be more spaces for rail travellers, a longer time allowance for those dropping off and picking up – and parking charges that are lower and more flexible.
The existing rail users car park – in Mariner Street – is to be replaced by an £85m development set to help regenerate the High Street area.
Labour cllr Robert Francis-Davies, the council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “We’ve worked hard with transport partners to ensure that train users have an improved experience when they need to park close to the station.
“Parking in the multi-storey will mean they have more spaces – a rise from around 46 to 96 – and they will no longer have to cross a main road between their car and station.
“They will continue to park just two minutes’ walk from the railway station entrance and have a 24/7 car park.”
Labour cllr Mark Thomas, cabinet member for environment and infrastructure management, said: “Rail users will be paying less and will have more flexibility in the durations they choose to park. Their all-day rate will fall from £7 in Mariner Street to £6 in High Street – and the High Street facility offers low-cost parking for shorter periods too.
“The multi-storey’s seven free short-stay spaces will have an occupation limit of 35 minutes, up from 20 minutes in Mariner Street. The stairwells have been painted and a new lift now allows wheelchair access to the top deck from the one below.
“Other upgrade work is planned – we want the facility to earn a Safer Parking Scheme national Park Mark award. Work is likely to include improved lighting and new CCTV cameras.”
New signs in Swansea will direct those arriving by train and car to the dedicated new parking area. Others will direct non-rail users to the multi-story levels other than the top deck. Charges are the same for all.
Swansea Council will manage the new rail users car park under a management agreement on behalf of Network Rail.
The Mariner Street site, along with an adjoining council car park which closed recently, has been taken on by student accommodation provider Fusion Students.
Fusion have started site demolition and will soon begin construction on their 17-storey, 60m-high complex shortly.
Its 780 rooms will help the city cater for its growing student population and will see its young residents bring new life to the city centre.
Swansea has embarked on a programme of regeneration that, once delivered, will result in more than £1bn of investment.
It is hoped that this will create thousands of private sector jobs and a thriving city centre as well as first class leisure, business, retail and residential accommodation.
