Long-serving Labour councillor June Burtonshaw has stepped down from her role as the City Council’s armed forces champion.
After seven years as the council’s inaugural armed forces champion Cllr Burtonshaw has handed over the position to her fellow Labour Cllr Wendy Lewis.
“The role involves supporting all the armed forces in Swansea and all those who have signed up to the Covenant,” said Cllr Burtonshaw.
“Everyone who signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, such as the army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force and various charities and partners meet up every two months.
“Since signing the pledge in 2012 we have gone from strength to strength.”
Added Cllr Burtonshaw: “Wendy and her husband Jeff have always supported me by coming to the events and she is an ideal candidate to take over from me.”
Cllr Lewis said: “It’s an honour to take over from June and I hope I can fulfil the role as well as June has. It is a very rewarding role.”
